This article shows how important having someone to look up to is. Everyone has a role model, even Ray Charles. People even found Ray Charles as a good role model or mentor. People that come from disadvantages such a single parent household or poverty greatly benefit from mentoring programs. Results showed that almost 50% of those in the mentoring programs were less likely to experiment with drugs, thats amazing. And the mentors are not necessarily trained professionals, some are just regular people like you and me. Sometimes having a mentor is just about having a relationship with someone you trust and can talk to. Mentoring has increased drastically over the past twenty years and it continues to grow. I think mentoring is a great way to give back and help others with their day to day struggles.

Mentoring is one of the strongest influences on anyone in the world, especially young children. Proven by Ray Charles and Quincy Jones, their mentors effected them in such a positive way that they felt the need to give back after they found the right paths in their life. To children, it is the little things that make them fulfilled, such as taking time out of your day to teach them piano or bring them shopping with you. As Marc Freedman said, "it's the relationship itself" that makes mentoring so special. He said with most of his experiences in mentoring programs, none of the mentors were trained or majored in that kind of service, but they did it from their heart to help others. That form of love is recognized by the children and helps them in their future lives. This article has influenced me to try to set a better example for younger kids, noticing that my decisions to affect others as well.
ReplyDeleteDid those mentors who had a background in youth counseling, psychology, or education take a different approach when mentoring the kids in Marc's programs? Did the results differ?

People never know how much a single action can influence someone else's life, like in the case of mentoring. Even though the actual action of mentoring a child, adult, or transcontinental-peer may require minimal effort, its by products can be vast. That is why I feel that one should always try to positiviely interact with each other, whether it be a simple smile or a long chat. The evidence this article provides regarding the effects of mentoring is quite impressive. By having a relationship with another person, one can reduce violence. This is such an easy task that can create major benefits not only to the people involved, but also to society in general.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am still curious about is: Is there a trend for people who were mentored as a children to go on and become mentors for others? Or, do these two concepts no correlate?

This article really sparked my curiousity. Can having a mentor really make such a big difference. Then I thought about the few mentors that I have had. One was a senior when I was a freshmen and she would practice my piano with me in orchestra class. It was something that she would do on the side when she was really busy just to help me get better. I just never realized how big of a difference it actually made until reading this article. If there is someone who really wants you to get better at something you love and they have no alterior motives, than if just makes sense that they would have a great impact on your life. I liked this article because it brought thoughts like this and other positive ones to my head about humanity in general and what one person can do. It was very inspiring! I am still curious however about how people actually find mentors if not through special programs.

This article very thoroughly explains the process and benefits of mentoring, and I think that the idea is absolutely wonderful. If everyone were to share a bit of what they had, not necessarily monetarily but at least emotionally, the world might become a better place. I am a firm believer in the idea of passing on the “chain of love,” and I know that like Ray Charles and Quincy Jones, once someone is helped, they cannot resist forwarding the same gesture. Again, if we all put in this same level of commitment, we might be able to solve some of society’s ills. This reminds me very specifically of the Arrupe program at Saint Ignatius, because they are doing the same thing as the people in this article; they are spending time with inner city children to help them see life with a brighter life. I have never participated in the program myself, but I know so many people that have, and they constantly tell me that not only do the kids enjoy and benefit from the tutoring and mentoring, but the leaders also find joy and hope in lending a helping hand. When this article mentioned corporations assisting with mentoring programs, that also reminded me of the movie “27 Dresses” because one of the main characters, George, is a CEO of his own company and has a “little brother” through the YMCA named Pedro. As silly as that is to come to my mind, I saw the effect that George had on Pedro’s life. I cannot help but believe that these sort of positive relationships are influencing children in real life as well. Perhaps they might breed a new generation that is more caring, more peaceful, and more hopeful. If I had to ask one question about this article, I would want to know, “What are some other ways that teenagers and average people can get involved with the international mentoring initiative?”

I think this article is very inspirational and uplifting. To think that one person can make another person see life a completly different way amazes me. I know in my life, I've had people help me, especially in stage crew. It's basically the older kids' job to teach the freshman and sophomores how crew goes and how to build things and do things right. They really take you under their wing. I just hope that now that I'm older, I can be a mentor for the younger kids and help them the way the seniors helped me. When you have a mentor helping you out, I think you don't really appreciate it until you're on your own and think back and know exactly why you're doing so well; your mentor. It's wonderful to know that there are people out there so selfless that they don't mind giving up their time to help others that need it. One question I have is if you got mentoring when you were young, does it tend to be a domino effect and make them feel like they should mentor others?

i believe that this article was very inspiring to me. People really can make a difference in other peoples lives with out even trying. Like the article said. Just showing up really does means something. You don't have to sit there and try and get into someone's head. Just showing that you are taking time out of your life just to be with your little brother or sister really does mean a lot to them. I know that i have had people in my life that have really influenced me to do something more with my life and to go after my goals with out telling me that i need to do this and i need to do that. I think that that is the key to being a good mentor. Not pushing someone into something that they do not want to you. Just supporting them in every choice that they make, even if you do not agree with it. This program really is a great thing. Not only are you making others happy but you are getting the saticfaction of being the one that is making a difference. Even if it's not a big one.

This atricle was very meaningful. I love hearing about how people help others. Mentoring, is a great way to help others. Through my own experience, i am a PAWS mentor and i am a mentor to others; friends, familyand relatives. In PAWS i am the mentor towards freshman. I am there for them if andwhen ever they need my help. Outside of school, i am a mentor to whom ever. I am there to help and be the person God wanted me to be.
ReplyDeleteI expecially enjoyed reading about the poeple ray Charles changed in his life time. Ray Charles is such an inspirational person and musician.
My question to this article would be how can more people, students, teachers, etc. get involved in the mentoring program in schools, out of schools and in their community?

I was happy to find that I could easily relate to this article because I am a PAWS mentor. Having a mentor was supposed to be helpful freshman year which was questionable but this article reinforced the idea. It’s nice to know that I can have an effect on someone. After reading the article, I realized that giving attention to someone for a few hours a month can benefit both the mentor and the mentee. Although mentoring is more thought of as helping the mentee, I consider it a way to expand friendships or networks. Reading this article was enjoyable because it is nice to hear that there are programs out there that reach out and help children living in poverty. My questions related to this article are: Do other schools offer mentoring programs? Why is mentoring only limited to incoming freshmen? Why aren’t teachers more actively involved in mentoring?

This article embodies the saying "you can make a difference". It shows that one person can really affect someone else's life, and it isn't even hard. Many people think there efforts are small and don't matter, but this article shows that your help really does make a difference on the lives of others. I also liked this article because it shows a good way to help the needy. It is a good example of how you can help without simply donating money. Also, the article gave a good aproach because it didn't just full-on push you into mentoring. The article simply talked about it, and gave a few links incase you wanted further detail. Overall, the article was good because it was laid back and informative while showing us the difference we can make.

Last school year, our theme was "serving the dear neightbor." We learned the significance of this theme when we learned about the Christian view of humanity. The Christian view of humanity states that that humans are interdependent, and need each other to learn and live their lives to the fullest. One of the ways we as Christians live our lives to the fullest is by "serving the dear neighbor." This article depicts what it truely means to serve the dear neighbor. Through various mentoring programs, so many Americans as well as citizens of other nations who did not have the opportunity to persue the education they desired, or simply wanted to learn or improve in a skill or an occupatiopn have gotten the chance through peer mentoring. As the range of methods of communication increases, mentoring is possible and convenieent for anyone. Menotorng offers many opportunities fo us to use our talents to change the world. It shows the promise of a bright future for all involved as well. All it takes is someone who has the desire to learn or improve-and someone who is willing to listen.

This article shows how one person can affect and change so many lives. It is so remarkable how one person can have a life, that seems like the world is coming to an end for him, and then one person can teach or show him something and the world starts to get brighter for him. We never get to see anything good anymore on the news. It is always about war, killings, and many unhappy things going on the world. Rarely we ever see such happiness and strength that people indure to become happy. I think this article is just like this. Ray Charles feels like giving up, and then Wiley came up in his life and showed him how to play the piano, and that gave him the strength to pursue playing the piano. I really like this article, and I think we should see more of the these stories throughout the news today! My question is has Ray Charles influenced other peoples lives, such as playing the piano?

It’s cool reading how Ray Charles was greatly influenced by a mentor and was a greatly influential mentor in return. The article shows how much difference one person can make on another. It reminds me of the saying, “To the world, you may be one person, but to one person, you may be the world.” Mentors can really help their mentees by just taking time to talk to them and listen to them. It was also interesting reading about the story behind the word “mentor.”
ReplyDeleteWhat other celebrities have had a mentor that greatly influenced them? What qualities make a good mentor?

This article really opened my eyes to how important mentoring is. It also showed me that no matter how famous a person is, they all started off somewhere with someone to look up to. Reading about how Ray Charles would have never been famous if it weren't for Wiley Pittman was really interesting. I think it was great that they both took time to help other people learn. I also think it was very interesting that the teenagers who are involved in mentoring are less likely to be violent. Mentoring is a great idea. It not only helps others learn, but also helps them stay out of trouble. How does mentoring help kids stay out of trouble?

I never would have guessed that by how this article started, it would be about someone famous like Ray Charles. It shows how no matter what happened or what condition he was in, he always made the best for himself and tried to learn. His patience and determination finally payed off when he became a very tallented iano player. Yet he still took time out of his busy schedue to teach others. This is a good article showing how you have to have faith and hope to make it through hardtimes because there's always something better waiting for you.
ReplyDeletemy only question is, how exactly did he learn to play the piano and teach others when his vision was not good or not existant?

This article really teaches people a lot about how you can affect just one persons life and in reality you have affected so many more. The mentoring program really helps these kids learn that there is more out there in the world and shows them that people do care. I think that is a great idea that department stores are even getting envolved with this. It shows that people want to help others because everyone deserves a chance in life. Also when you think about mentoring you seem to think just mentoring in schools but this article took that to a whole other level that shows that it is greater than that.
ReplyDeleteMy question is: Do the kids in the mentoring program sign up themselves or how to the get into it?
cristyn e. block c
I found the whole mentoring concept to be an interesting one. For instance, where it said that some companies mentor school students, I'd never thought of that idea before. The program seems somewhat similar to the PAWS program at SJA. Clearly, mentoring has significant positive effects on both sides of the relationship. Even if it's not 100% effective in preventing bad behavior in the youth, it helps quite a bit. It proves that most children need someone to trust and talk to, even if it seems insignificant at the time.
ReplyDeleteIs this program or something like it available in the Cleveland public schools? And if it is, is it as effective as the one in the article?

This articles shows a lot about how reaching out to one person has a spiral affect. I liked how the article started out with Ray Charles and how he was helped by his neighbor. Then it moves on to Quincy Jones and how Ray Charles reached out to him. This really proves the point I think the article is trying to make. How just being there for one person can in return help many more. Before reading this article, I never knew that mentoring had such a positive effect. I was surprised to see how just from a one year relationship 46 percent were less likely to try drugs. I was even more surprised to learn that a majority of the mentors did not have a previous background in youth counseling, physcology, or education. I believe that with these results, the e-mentoring could have as much of an effect that they hope it will.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: Is it possible that the e-mentoring could become corrupt from some businesses getting involved only for the benefit of a good reputation?

This article shows how much a difference a person can make on another persons life. Also how much the mentoring programs help kids realize that people do care about them , and since people do care about them they are not going to turn to drugs and violence. This article really shows how just giving someone a little bit of help and guidance can really make a difference for them. I didn't realize how common and widespread mentoring programs are across the world. I think it is great that people take time out mentor someone. All it takes to be a mentor is to just care and be there to listen to your mentee. It is awesome that people can have that much of an effect on each other that thay can influence them to stay away from the drugs, violence, and other bad behaviors.

While reading this article i realized how much one person can influence another. We all have somone in our lives that we look up to, and who we want to be like. If everyone would be willing to help someone else out then we could make so much of a difference. This article showed me how people can help change the lives of others. Being a mentor to someone gives them motivation and gives them someome to talk to when they need help or guidance. It was nice to see that famous people, such as Ray Charles, even had mentors that they looked up to and helped them when they were struggling. Mentoring programs are a good idea because if someone ever feels alone and they have no one to talk to, they always have their mentor there to lead them in the right direction. Today mentoring is a valuable tool that can help young people make the most of their lives with the help of that special someone. Mentoring is a simple act that can slowly change our world. People can do the simplest thing that is considered mentoring like when Pittman taught Charles to play the piano. At the time Pittman probably didn’t even realize that he was slowly changing this kid’s life but everything he did meant so much to Ray Charles. Since someone helped Ray Charles he felt like he should do something to help others so he helped Quincy Jones when he was only 16 years old. That made me realizes that you don’t have to be an adult to be a mentor. Also you might not even realize that you’re making an impact in the person’s life at the moment but younger kids listen and remember every word you say to them. I really like how in New York the one school takes students to an office building so the CEOs and employees there can mentor some of the kids who life in the rough neighborhoods.

I thought this article was very inspirational. it talked about how mentoring is important in society. Everyone has a mentor including Ray Charles and Quincy Jones. Mentoring shows the positive impact on the bad situation. Today, almost every person has a mentor whether they are parents, teachers, grandparents, friends, students, etc. Mentoring is a valuable tool that can help the mentee see the positive and live their lives with the wisdom, inspiration, and positive influence they learn from their mentors. This can relate to me because I am a PAWS mentor.

This article about Ray Charles showed me whatever you want to achieve you can. The way Ray Charles did what he did to get known through music and the troubles he went through are just so inspirational. This article makes me want to go out and pursue my dreams because if Ray Charles can do I can too. Also, the fact that one person can inspire you to do what you want can change the world for the better. Thats where mentoring came in hand for Ray Charles because he wanted to make a difference. He already made a difference in the music world but he wanted to go beyond that. People in the world use mentoring everyday to change their lives or inspire them to make the best out of what they have. Live your life and pursue the dreams that will make your life the best in can be. Questions: What else can mentoring offer us besides guidance, help and inspiration?

I never knew how much mentors and idols made such a difference in people's lives. It could make the difference from become involved in violence in adolescent years, to staying out of trouble and making better decisions. Wether they know it or not mentors make a huge difference in the lives of others, be it something big like these two examples, or something smaller but still influential.

This article is very inspirational. it shows us how we can make a differnce in people's lives. Mentoring is honestly a great thing. sometimes it can save people's lives depending on the trouble they may be getting into. Mentoring is an amazing thing. Some kids just feel neglected but when you have a mentor there is somebody always there. Espeacially when it comes to peer mentoring. Since both people are around the same age they can connect with the person more about there problems. instead of standing back and allowing young people today get into the trouble they may get into, I think we need to take a stand and talk to some of those people. Take the time out of our "busy" schedules an just listen to what they may have to say.

The whole "e-mentoring" thing threw me for a loop- I'd never have thought that people would be able to help each other only with emails before. It's interesting how one person mentoring another can create such a difference, can create a noticable change in the statistics they show. This really shows the view that one person can help others-- and without even having to see the person face-to-face. One person mentoring others becoming such a huge thing is astounding. I love that it's large companies and the like that are helping with the idea, too. It seems really interesting.

In this article, the author does a great job discussing the issue of children who are born with disadvantages whether it be born in a rascist enviornment or being born by a single mother into poverty. As the article started out it showed how you cannot give up on your dreams no matter who you are, but the real message didn't come until the middle of the article when the topic of mentoring was brought up. The author also does a great job showing how if someone mentors you and helps you out, then you should do the same for that person or another person. This now describes the title "Saving the World One-on-One" because if one person begins this trend and helps even one peros, it will be passed on to millions and this will make the world a better place. This is the big picture, what the author is really trying to do is reach out to people of all ages; anyone who reads this article and carries out the theme can start a trend and make the world better one person at a time. This person could be older, but if younger people such as high school students read this and fulfill the theme then we can reach out to many more people as our life progresses and teacher the generations after us how to live out there life. Overall this was a fantastic article and really does a great job at reaching out to people of all ages on the topic of the lack of mentoring in the world today.

This article was very inspirational. It is a perfect example of how important mentoring and building strong bonds with others can influence the world in such a positive way. Ray Charles was mentored by Quincy Jones, which is absolutely incredible, but the article aso stresses that you don't have to be a "superstar" to make a difference in someone's life. Originary people have the power to make a differnece in the lives of others. I look at several mentors, whether the have been teachers, friends, or coworkers that have influenced and inspired me with their actions. Helping others, especially through mmentoring progams, can be so rewarding. If more people got involved and took the time to mentor and influence someone, the world would be such a wonderful place.

I think everyone has one person they can look up to in this world. Whether it's a parent, sibling, friend, or some person we don't know, it allows us to follow some kind of direction and guidance. I think it is great that Ray Charles wanted to mentor Quincy Jones on playing the piano. Just wanting to help someone is so much more important than being forced or asked to help. I'm glad businesses and schools are doing something to help in the effort of mentoring. This article says it the relationship itself that makes mentoring so great and so effective. No statistics or facts can actually prove to me that mentoring actually helps the person. It's the effect you get out of the time you share with the person and how they affect you. I think this was an article that needed to be read, because it showed me especially that there is always someone who needs help and guidance more than I do. Being a high school student, I want to help. I know they are younger or even people my own age, who just need someone to talk to, or a friend.

This article shows how important having a mentor is. If Ray Charles didn't have a mentor, would our music be where it is today? The fact that his mentor, Quincy Jones, wasn't a famous sports player or a famous rapper, shows that people can find role models and heroes in everyday people. I thought this article was a great example that everyone can change the world just by having a positive effect on another person. By reading this, I feel that I can change the world by helping someone else by being a good role model. Hopefully it will be kind of like a domino effect, if someone looks up to me for the good things I do, maybe other people will look at that person for the good things he/she does. Ray Charles was born into such a hard life and it is hard for most people to overcome the obstacles he overcame. What really helped him was his role model, Quincy Jones.

This article not only shows how someone reaching out to you can make a huge impact on your life, but it shows the importance of paying it forward. Pittman could have just told Charles that it would be impossible for him to learn anyways and it wasn't worth his time, but he didn't. Charles could have told Jones that he was too busy to teach him but he didn't. He took what he had and passed it forward. It's also remarkable to see how just having a mentor can dramatically decrease the risk of getting into trouble with things like drugs, alcohol, or behavioral problems. This article actually kind of got me interested enough to see what I can do to reach out. This article was written in 2006, I wonder if mentoring programs are still as effective today.

This article provides a simple way for anyone to make a difference in someone else's life. I love the title: "Saving the world one-on-one." It's letting us know that to change the world, our actions don't have to be earth-shattering; basic kindness and a smile or baseball game or lunch can make all the difference in one person's life. I think one problem with our world is that everyone who sets out to change it and make it better starts with really big ideas that usually aren't reasonable or doable. This article reminds us we just have to do small things, for one person at a time, and we can make the world better. It's saying we don't need money, or special talents, or lots of people in high places to do something to change the world: all we need is kindness. Such a simple concept yet it accomplishes so much. The statistics of decreased violence, drug use, and general misbehavior were amazing. If one person can accomplish something like this, what could 1,000 people do? 2,000? 10,000? the world?

Mentoring programs also have great benefits, these kids that are mentored are less likely to get involved with drugs and violent behavior. This valuable tool of mentoring can help people to make the most of their lives especially those that are suffering from poverty or the weight of other social ills. ‘Ninety percent of life is simply showing up.’ Showing someone that you care and you are there for them can make a difference in their life. A positive mentor can make such an impact on a persons life. Showing them the right things in life. How to act in certain situations. Even just being their for them when times are tough. I think this program is a wonderful idea. They show that all around the world teens go through the same things. I think that is very important to spread around because many people just think they are alone, that they are the only people going through these hard times. If Ray Charles’s neighbor did not teach him how to play the piano, Ray Charles life would have been completely different and the face of music as we know would probably be completely different. It’s nice to see that so many people are going along with the mentoring programs and are willing to help. It amazes me to see how much a few hours a month can impact one person life. I also thought it was interesting to find out that countries around the world have the same social problems as we do and that other countries are adopting the mentoring programs and it seems to be working for them as well. This article has really inspired me to start thinking about being a mentor to someone in my society. Also the e-mentoring seemed like a great idea and I think that it would be easier for mentors to give more time to the kids that need it. I really hope that the number of mentors and progress of the kids in mentoring problems goes up.
ReplyDeleteHave there been any problems with the e-mentoring? For example since most of the kids who need mentors are in poverty wont it be hard for them to do mentoring over the computer if they don’t have access to them.

Sorry this is late I also got mixed up because of the day off!
The impact that someone has on another's life just by being there for them and helping them through life can make such an impact. Sometimes it takes only one person to change things around. Mentoring programs are a great way to show someone else what another choice in life is. By seeing someone else do good and live life the right way, it insprires others to do the same.
ReplyDeleteAre there different types of mentoring programs?

Sorry for the lateness!
Once again, a very good article. I thought the direct examples at the beginning made the article unique. It really makes you think about how you as one single person can change someone's life with simple actions. We can't all be talented like Ray Charles, but we can use other talents to help people. It is a very inspirational thought. I liked the quote from Woody Allen. It just goes to show that by just proving that you care, you can help someone. You don't have to do much. I don't know if we have community programs for mentoring. I definitely know that we have a school one. I wonder what other famous or successful people can credit mentoring partly.
