Archbishop Desmond Tutu seems to be doing an amazing job of teaching and guiding people into forgiving each other. There was so much hate in South Africa and the fact that he is trying to patch the rifts up, when his race was discriminated against, is incredible. I do believe that Archbishop Tutu is right about forgiveness being necessary. If holding grudges and hate continue to exist, then nobody would ever be able to work together or better their lives.
ReplyDeleteHow is Archbishop Desmond Tutu reaching people and opening them up to the idea of forgiveness? Does he talk, make an example of it, or let them choose?

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a wonderful man. The way that he talks and shares his words is very insightful. The way he talks to others about forgiveness is incredible. He visited Rwanda during the genocide and preached to them. He said they were laughing which means that Tutu can work in ways to help people fogive and get better. I believe that you need forgiveness for there to be a future. If you do not forgive, you are holding onto grudges from the past. If you let those go, it is easier to move on for a brighter future.
ReplyDeleteDoes Desmond Tutu travel all around the world to preach about his idea of forgiveness and if so how does he do it? Does he preach to large groups or talk to individuals, etc?

I really liked this article! By reading it, I got to learn a little bit more about Desmond Tutu and his mission. I really liked his view on forgiveness... “Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back. It’s a second chance for a new beginning. And the remembering part is particularly important. Especially if you don’t want to repeat what happened.” These lines really made me reflect on my own life and my own view of forgiveness. I really liked just how peaceful he seemed, just by reading his words, I could feel how deep his thinking is. I am impressed with how much he has done to keep peace in the world. I do agree that without forgiveness there is no future, because without forgiveness, we can not form lasting relationships without people who really would affect our lives in a positive way. Without them, we can not be the people that we want to be.

I do agree with Tutu in saying that without forgiveness, there is no future. This is so because if one cannot or does not forgive, then nothing can move forward. Without moving forward there is no future, just a repeat of the past. As Tutu stated, forgiveness is a way of starting over. In a situation where one party has wronged another, someone has to give and forgive the other. If this does not happen, then a cycle of unhappiness or violence may persist. Parties must learn to take the step to forgive others and move on so that the future may be positive. One cannot forgive and forget, we must forgive and remember to not act that way again. Tutu words of forgiveness are most definitely thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am curious about is how the people of South Africa could restrain them selves from seeking revenge after being discriminated against for years?

Reverend Desmond Tutu is doing a fantastic job of showing people how to forgive and move on. During the interview he was asked about Rwanda and he said that they needed to do the same thing as South Africa did. They need to have a new idea for government and stop fighting for power, just find one that suits everyone. Yes, i do think that Reverend Desmond Tutu is right about forgiveness. If you are holding a grudge or cannot forgive someone how can you ever move past it? Forgiveness is like giving someone a new beginning and that is what South Africa and Rwanda need. The committees formed in South Africa were really inspiring because there are people repenting for their sins that they committed, ex. the former head of police washing the feet of the mothers of the men that were killed by police. The thought of forgiving someone can be hard to comprehend but its honestly the only way to go forward in life together in unity.

When I first read that statement by Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu I thought he was crazy like there has to be a future for people if they don’t forgive others. As I read the article I began to understand what he was talking about and why he said that. I think don’t he means if we don’t forgive there won’t be a future for us as in we will go straight to hell if we don’t forgive others at first that’s how I interpreted that statement. When I finished the article I feel like he’s trying to say if we don’t forgive others then there won’t be a future for us personally. It will eat you up inside if you don’t forgive others and as Tutu said “If you don’t forgive, you’re tied up in knots.” When you forgive others you tend to feel better like you aren’t holding it in you and you don’t feel like you’re walking around with a load of bricks on your back anymore. I really believe in Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu’s statement “And yet, if you forgive, you free yourself.”

I think Reverend Tutu's view on forgiveness is very true. He, as well as many others, were victims to great hatred against their race. It really says a lot about someone when they are willing to forgive someone for such a horrible thing. I think it is great that he is spreading this idea about forgiveness, because many people do live their lives holding grudges and it doesn't solve anything for them. I think I do agree with Tutu that there is no future without forgiveness. When you don't forgive, and you just try to block the event out and forget about it, you aren't helping anyone. You are preventing yourself from moving on past whatever happened. Like Tutu said, forgiveness gives a fresh start.
ReplyDeleteRebecca A, Block C
I would have to say that I agree with Archbishop Desmond Tutu with the statement that without forgiveness, there is no future. If we never learn to forgive we will just trap ourselves in knots, meaning that we might become too wrapped up in with grudges and disputes that we will eventually forget what the real meaning of life is. This is evident in the case of the Rwandan genocide. The two sides were always fighting against each other and once one reached the top the other would try and do the same. The archbishop suggests that they must end the cycle because obviously nothing good is coming from it and that the cycle can be broken through forgiveness. By forgiving their enemies they can find the true meaning of life and have a happy and certain future. I believe that he meant that a future without forgiveness wasn’t one worth living but a future with forgiveness was one of great certainty of happiness and peace.
ReplyDeleteHas any other government going through a similar tragedy adapted this philosophy? Has it worked and if not why?
Bride S, BLock B
This article proves that forgiveness is both a powerful and a difficult thing. It is always hard to forgive someone who has hurt you, and more so if forgiving them means acknowledging that you yourself have done wrong. I do agree that without forgiveness, there is no future. That applies not just to South Africa, but to every country. Without forgiveness, everyone would be at each other's throats all the time; there would be no peace ever in the world. We think we've got it bad now; in reality, we have no idea how bad things could potentially get if one country's leader decides not to forgive an insult from another.

This article is all about forgiveness, about forgiving those that wrong us. Desmond Tutu talked in the interview about the horrible genocide in Rwanda and how it can be stopped. He says the Hutu and the Tutsi continue to try to fight to get on top and have the most power. One of them has to stop the cycle and forgive the other. He also talks about the difficulty of forgiveness. It is difficult but it is necessary for a new beginning. I love the quote by Desmond Tutu, "Forgiving is not forgetting it's actually remembering, remembering and not using your right to hit back. It's a second chance for a new beginning." If we use forgiveness we can solve a lot of problems in the world. As Desmond Tutu says "without forgiveness there is no future." My question is what exactly does the word Apartheid mean?
ReplyDeleteJessika H, Block C
“Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back. It’s a second chance for a new beginning". I believe that this quote is an answer the the question: Why is forgiveness necessary for the future? It's very difficult and hard to do, but it can solve alot of problems that prevent people and things from moving on, to bigger and better things. I found that Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was a very influential and remarkable person. South Africa has had a history of fighting tribes, opposing values, racism. What Tutu helped achieve was forgiveness, he acknowledged that is was a hard thing to do, but realized and helped others realized how imoportant it was to have for a successful future.
ReplyDeletequestion: how did Reverend Desmond Tutu, stick with this and perserve through this sticking with a mesasge that so many people rejected? Were there times when he felt like giving up?

Desmond Tutu is an extremely wise man. His outlook on his country's horrible past is not one of resentment and anger, but forgiveness and optimism. He is right in saying that without forgiveness, there is no future. Even though apologies are sometimes hard because it's admitting you were wrong and humans are so full of self-pride, it is necessary to forgive. Forgiveness breaks down walls and provides a chance to start again, as Desmond Tutu talked of new beginnings. New beginnings, especially in Africa with their history of apartheid and racism, are extremely important. It's amazing and a true blessing that Desmond Tutu came to be in such an influential position in a country so in need. I don't think if they had any other leader, the country wuold have achieved such great landmarks in the fight against apartheid. I believe God sent Desmond Tutu because He knew that's what Africa needed.
ReplyDelete--Even though forgiveness is powerful, will it be enough to mend the past for everyone in Africa forever, or will the resentment return?

"If you forgive, you free yourself." I believe if you hold a grudge about past events you can not move on with your relationship with that person. Always focusing on the past and not moving forward and growing in relationships with those who have hurt you in the past, is a waste of time. I really do believe in Desmond Tutu's ideas. If the people of Rwanda can forgive those of there country, people all of the world can forget the little things in life that bother them. Forgive and forget is such a strong truth that should be used by everyone in need of forgiving others. Desmond has sent such a powerful message to his people. He was made a wonderful influence in Africa. The way that Africa has progressed truly amazes me and I really believe that Tutu has spread his message the way he wanted.
ReplyDeleteDo you think this process of forgiveness can be spread through the United States to other contries?

Reading this article was really inspiring. Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu's view of forgiveness is what was inspiring to me. After all that he went through while growing up because of his race and then forgiving those people amazes me. I think the last lines that he says, "And yet, if you forgive, you free yourself. Without forgiveness, there is no future,” are very true. If you hold a grudge about something that has happened, then you can't free yourself and there wont be a future.
ReplyDelete- Have any other countries tried Tutu's philosophy of forgiveness?

“Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back. It’s a second chance for a new beginning. And the remembering part is particularly important. Especially if you don’t want to repeat what happened.”
ReplyDeleteThis quote stuck out to me as being Archbishop Tutu's motto. Archbishop Tuto was a key figure in changing laws thast violated the inherant dignity of the human person, such as apartheid, to laws of love and freedom. I truely believe that it was forgiveness that allowed these new laws and the new democratic South Africa to be as successful as it is today. This forgiveness gave South Africa a new beginning.
But forgiveness is not easy. We see everyday how easy it is to forgive people. The reaason it makes it hard is because we feel the people do not deserve it. Archbishop Tutu stated that "without forgivenss, there is no future." I agree with this statement. It is as easy not to forgive as it is to forgive. Everyone has some sort of future. But what we have to ask ourselves is is it the future we want for ourselves? Is it the future God wants for us? Christ said, "forgive not seven times, but seven times seventy." This shows that forgiveness should be a part of our lives, and in this forgiveness we can have a fresh start at a good future.
Question-The government in South Africa has become democratic, but is there still apartheid throughout the country?
Julie G Block A sorry :)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this article. Desmond Tutu seems to be a wonderful man, and his philosophies are very interesting. The idea that forgiving isn't forgetting makes sense, but I had never thought of it in that way before, which makes it seem like a radical idea. "If you forgive, you free yourself"-- what a hopeful line... It's inspiring to people who hold on to grudges, especially over stupid things. The way that the Africans look on grudges is particularly interesting, because I'd never thought of it as one person holding power over the other.
ReplyDeleteAfter having read the article, I fully agree with Tutu's comment that without forgiveness, there is not future-- everyone would be fighting with each other and be stuck in a world so full of chaos and hate that we'd be stuck in the here and now (hey, sounds familiar! >.<) instead of trying to advance together as a united front, and united is always the strongest way to go.

I was blown away by this article. When i first thought about forgiveness i though it was a way of making the other person feel better and makig them feel like what they did wasnt as bad as it was. However i realized after i read what Desmond Tutu had to say aout the topic it totally changed my opinion about forgiveness. I absolutely agree that "without forgiveness there is no future". If we didnt forgive people we would be "nursing grudges" and we wouldnt be able to move forward with our lives. We would be stuck in a world full of hatred and a lot of revenge causing chaos. I really admired his bravery in standing up for himself and his people in South Africa. All of the people forgave the ones who treated them so badly and it was a great example to set for others around the world. My question is if he goes around the world speaking to different groups of people informing them of his phlosophy?

I really liked this article about Desmond Tutu. I liked how he said, '"Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back."' and how he compared it to Rwanda. The genocide in Rwanda is such a huge problem, and they can forgive their oppressors following this philosophy. I agree that without forgiveness there is no future, because people will never be able get over problems of the past. Holding grudges and living in the past just makes situations worse, if people just forgave each other then they could move on and live happily.
ReplyDeleteHow does Desmond Tutu seem to have such ease preaching this message to oppressed people? Is he seen as such a powerful figure, that people just except what he says?

I really enjoyed reading this article. He is such an inspirational man, just from reading the short excerpt of the interview you can tell. He seems very wise and knows what he’s doing. From his words he seems like such a peaceful, loving man. It amazes me that in the midst of all the crazy things happening in the world today, and all the bad people there are out there, there are truly good people like him. Its incredible how much of a difference one person can make. Reading articles like this often make me wonder if we, too, can make a difference like he did. It almost seems impossible to have the faith he has, yet we are all capable of it. This leads me to my question, why is it that some people can act so easily upon their faith, and have such a great trust in God, while others seem to struggle with it so much?

I really liked reading about Desmond Tutu. I loved his perspective on forgiveness. It is very true that without forgiveness there is no future. Desmond Tutu did an amazing job at describing how forgiveness would help us get through anything, and move ahead. Forgiving others will make our souls' free, instead of trapping us. I also liked how he described the remembering part of forgiveness. We have to remember the mistakes so we don't make the same ones later on.
ReplyDeleteHas Desmond Tutu written a book about forgiveness and his beliefs?

Yes, I do agree with Desmond Tutu, that without forgiveness there is no future. I think that if you cant forgive, then you won't let go of the past and in turn you won't be able to move foward. If you can't move foward and forgive, then you won't be able to live each and everyday to the fullest and you will regret each day you wasted because you could not forgive. Also you are hurting the other person even more, and inturn they wont be able live life, and move foward. They too will be also stuck in the past. Overall, I really liked interview, and I hope people get alot out of it, just as i did. "To understand everything is to forgive everything"

Everyone has a hard time forgiving- its one of the hardest things to do. The phrase forgive and forget is not what Desmond Tutu wants is to do. Desmoud Tutu believes "Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back." This completley changed my view of forgivness for the reason that by forgiving someone we are allowing them to start over. We are also allowing ourselves to have a clean conscience because then were not holding grudges. Everyone sins so therefore everyone must forgive because if we don't there will be no future-Tutu. That statement is completely correct because if we don't forgive, no one can trust one another or befriend one another. Tutus article will stay with me, he taught me how to forgive!

I really liked this article. It demonstates the difficulty of the of forgiving. Everyone is able to forgive, but many are not willing to. Like Tutu said, it is sometimes hard to say sorry; many people don't like to admit when they're wrong, let alone ask for forgiveness from their mistake. Tutu provides a strong arguement to "without forgiveness, there is no future" by saying, Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back. It’s a second chance for a new beginning. And the remembering part is particularly important. Especially if you don’t want to repeat what happened.” I think he is saying that if we do not learn from the past, there will be no future because it will be a continous cylcle of what already happened. In this sense, forgiveness would act as some sort of an acceptance, to let others know we were wrong, we made a mistake, we've learned our mistake, and we're ready to make up for it. So yes, you could say i agree with that. With Tutu having said this, will Rwanda be willing to uprise forgiveness?

I do agree with Tutu that without forgiveness, there is no future. When you hold onto a grudge, you are also holding onto your past. The best way to turn the past into a memory and move toward the future is by forgiving. Like Tutu said, by forgiving, we are breaking the endless cycle of hostility and revenge that has plagued us since the fall of man. Holding grudges just leads to more problems, but by practicing forgiveness, we can look for a solution to our problems. By setting up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, South Africa has a strong foundation on which they can build up their country.
ReplyDeleteWould this system of being forgiving work well in other societies that face similar issues, such as the American South (Civil War), the Jews and Germans (Holocaust), or the Christians and Muslims (Crusades). What would the result be if this was more widely practiced?

I agree with Tutu when he said, "Without forgiveness, there is no future." Earlier in the article he says that when you forgive, you don't actually forget, but remember and learn and move on. I agree with this because you don't want to forget of the mistakes made but learn from them. He also says that when you forgive you are letting go of a grudge, and in order to live and grow you cannot be held down by grudges. By forgiving you are giving the other person a chance for a new beginning, Tutu says. This proves that without forgiveness, there is no future. Yes, the world does go on, but there is no true future where things can get accomplished and people can grow. My one question is how is Tutu helping people now?

Desmond Tutu is such an amazing man. he goes around and speaks about forgiveness. he is right about though. if we do not forgive how are we going to be able to move on with our lifes. if we all hold grudges then how are we going to get passed that point. i believe you should always forgive but never forget, something that is similar to Desmond Tutu's saying. You should forgive everyone for anything that they have ever done but don't forget it so the same mistake does not happen again.

This article really got me thinking about forgiveness. I am the type of person who eventually forgives someone but depending on how much it hurt is how long it takes me to forgive them. If someone has hurt me really bad it hurts to forgive them because I seems that if I forgive them I am letting myself become vulnerable to let them hurt me again and taht scares me. I know i should forgive them and I try to but it is hard sometimes to get what they have down out of my head. This article has made me realize that I am not only forgiving them but i am letting myself move on from the situation too. That is what is most important to take the situation learn something from it and move on. I think I do agree with him that without forgiveness there is no future. The first time I read that question I didn't agree but after reading the article it shows me that without forgiveness we are living in the past and can't learn anything from what has happened.
ReplyDelete-Has it always been so easy for Archbishop Desmond Tutu to forgive others?

In all that Desmond Tutu has said about forgiving people really has opened my eyes. There is so much to actually forgiving a person that I never really thought about. He said, "If you cannot forgive them, if you are nursing a grudge, then you are actually at the mercy of the perpetrator," and, "And yet, if you forgive, you free yourself." If I'm able to forgive somebody, I should be able to move on with my life. When Tutu has worked so hard with every commission in South Africa, it truely shows just how real his inner heart is. And when he states, "Forgiving and is not forgetting," it actually teaches me that no matter how hard it may be to forgive somebody, what has happened did in fact happen. You can't escape it or forget about it. It will always be there with you.

Reverend Desmond Tutu is a forgiving person, and we should definitely follow in his footsteps. As much as he and his country went though he had the guts to forgive all. Him doing this showed me that no matter how mad I am at someone or how upset they make me with what they do I should just forgive them. Life just doesn't make sense if you hold grudges, you should just forgive them and move on. “Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back. It’s a second chance for a new beginning. And the remembering part is particularly important. Especially if you don’t want to repeat what happened.” I feel that this quote goes perfect with what I just said about forgiving and moving on. In the end, I do agree with Tutu that without forgiveness, there is no future because if you don't forgive and hold a grudge you're going no where with that problem. On the other hand, if you forgive you are moving on and taking a risk and giving someone another chance to start over and make it right.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a great influence to other people. The way he talks about forgiveness being so hard is very true. He visited Rowanda just after the genocide and the way he could make people laugh and sing after something so horrible shows you how influential he really is. Holding grudges does nothing but hurt yourself and by forgiving you are remembering and learning from mistakes in the past.

Tutu is right. Forgiveness is hard because after you forgive someone it doesn't take away what they did. So, you're still reminded of it everyday. It's not just hard to forgive someone, it's hard to mean it. He was so kind to go and inspire the people to forgive and move on. I don't know how he could really get to the people after something that bad happened. I do agree with him that without forgiveness there is no future because like I said, if you don't mean it than you hold a grudge and can't move on with your life. I wonder what inspired Tutu to think he could really convince these hopeless people?

When we hold grudges you are holding such a huge pain inside, and you can not move on until you find a way to let it go. With this terrible problem of racism in south africa for so many years it would be hard to forgive, but it is a cleansing thing, and will help them be able to unite as a country again. I agree that without forgiveness there is not future becase you can not move on and grow without it.

After reading the article about Tutu, I definitely believe that forgiveness is the key to a successful future. Tutu sounds to me like one of the most forgiving people out there. To be able to go back to a place, that never accepted you, and try to make it a more suitable place to live shows that he was a very compassionate and forgiving person. He also tried to went to Rwanda after the genocide began to speak and made the people happy and gave them hope. He encourages people to forgive others because without forgiveness, grudges never go away and nothing will ever be resolved. The world would be nothing without forgiveness.

This short but sweet interview/article was very fascinating. It was interesting to hear what the archbishop had to say about forgivieness. I feel that it is very important to forgive. When you dont forgive, you sometimes feel like this burden you have to carry along with you. The archbishop made it sound like everyone and anyone needs and should be constantly fogiving. It doesn't just make the person who is the one forgiving someone better but it also helps the person who is being forgiven to feel better to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tutu about "without fogiveness, ther is no future." To me, this means that if you don't forgive, what is the world going to me like. Everyone is going to carry a burden on them and there going to regret not forgiving. If people don't forgive, the world won't grow, it'll just shrink because the human body, the people, aren't going to grow, because they aren't forgiving to others.

I can see why you like this guy so much. He is obviously very wise. I wish everyone could take a minute out of their days and just listen to what he's saying. They don't have to even try to do what he's saying right away. They could just think about it for a minute. It could make the world so much better. No one really realizes how important it is to forgive and to forgive fully. I liked how he said forgiving is not forgetting but remembering. I think that it was especially poignant on the 5th anniversary of the9/11 terrorist attacks. Even though he did not discuss the attacks, America could take his advice to heart on that significant day.

i think this artice shows that if a man like reverand tutu can forgive people, anyone should be able to. he faced so many rough times and harships in his life, yet he still stands strong by his belief that if there is no forgiveness there is no future. i completely agree with him though. life is short, too short to stay mad at someone or to hold a grudge. you have to forgive people then learn to forget what happened (while hopefully the person you forgave learned from their mistakes) the world could be ten times worse of a place if no one forgave people.

Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu is an inspiration for the entire world. His efforts to find peace and forgiveness in our world have shined through war, grudges, and what seemed to be an unending battle of hatred in South Africa. I think the most inspiring quality in Tutu is his motivational energy to get the world off on a better track towards God. His beliefs in God truly shine through his actions as he places emphasis of his teaching on forgiveness and how to have a new beginning with others. His quote from the interview “forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering—remembering and not using your right to hit back," shows how God has effected his life for the better and how he hopes we can all view God and forgiveness the same way.
